The New Lady

Christian Dior, the brand synonymous with lady-like elegance, is teaching us a thing or two this season about feminine dressing. While I was slightly underwhelmed by Raf Simons’ debut collection for Dior Couture 2012, I love what he’s designed for Pre-Fall 2013.

I thought he injected just the right amount of modernity and colour play, creating a chic collection that fuses masculine and feminine style tailoring.

With hints of minimalism reminiscent of Celine or even an Altuzarra Resort collection, I was at first concerned that the Dior “shape” was being lost in favour of too much angular structure.

However, I think the clothes above are pieces of such beauty and tap into some key trends- monochrome for one, and the “skirt/dress layered over pants” look that came to the fore last year. There’s the idea that these outfits represent the line between work-wear and after hours dressing.

The collection quickly revealed some of Dior’s more signature styles- the swing coats and dresses, and of course, gloves!

I love the little pops of chartreuse and salmon against the grey. And I’m a complete sucker for a great houndstooth print, so I couldn’t help but fall in love with these pieces!

Super-size Me

I’ve always loved oversized statement sunglasses. But finding the perfect pair can be a tricky feat. Too wraparound, dark and reflective, and you end up looking like a bug. Not to mention, they can kind of weigh your face down…Not the most comfortable thing.

Sunglasses, a selection from House of Harlow 1960

In 2006, I found my best friends at long last- the classic Dior ‘Glossy1′ sunglasses in dark brown tortoiseshell. And they stuck with me for all but a year until they were accidentally broken by the full force of Disneyland Paris’s Space Mountain.

Yup, bringing designer sunglasses on board a theme park ride was definitely not one of my smartest moments…

I do blame Dior however. Why oh why can other designers provide such hard and durable cases whilst Dior’s glasses are presented in awful soft and flimsy little things?

Anyway, after the amazing magic of some extremely powerful superglue and the talents of a lovely Sunglass Hut shop assistant in Dubai, my glasses were pretty much back to their former glory.

But I can’t resist the allure of multiple oversized pairs. Here are my current favourites:

These were an absolute steal from River Island!

Sunglasses, House of Harlow 1960. Love House of Harlow for their Nicole Richie-esque shades. After all, it is her label.

Also House of Harlow. The butterfly frames definitely make a statement!

Looking forward to adding more and more unusual styles to my collection. One of my newest pair is a retro-feel cat-eye pair by Alexander McQueen. You see, I’m trying to move away from my oversized obsession!

A Fashionable Getaway

I love lists of ‘where to’s', ‘what to’s', ‘top 50′s’ and any compilation of best hotels, restaurants, bars, boutiques, organised by category.

That way, you have a great checklist of places for future trips. And of course it’s always fun ticking off the places you’ve managed to visit, and add more to your mental bucket-list.

So for your summer travel inspiration today, here’s my pick of the most stunning designer hotels and designer-collaborated suites.

1. Bedroom at the Hotel Notre Dame, Paris, designed by Christian Lacroix

I love the colours of the wall mural set against the room’s exposed beams and earthy tones. Reminds me of a little artist’s studio from late 19th Century Paris, tucked high above the labyrinthine streets.

2. Bulgari Hotel, Bali

In true Balinese luxury, the Bulgari Hotel offers a serene blend of stone and wood, complete with open-ended ocean views. A real escapist hideaway.

3. Lounge at the Armani Hotel, Milan

Super masculine, bold and geometric, the Armani hotel combines modernity and sharp design. I love a lot of light and glass in hotels, and the dark polished floors offset this perfectly.

4. The Dior suite at The St Regis Hotel, New York

True to form, what else would you expect from a Dior collaboration with one of the world’s leading luxury hotel chains? Classic ‘Dior’ grey and romance are the predominant themes. A room fit for a true style maven.

5. The Schiaparelli suite at The Mayfair Hotel, London

Not to my taste exactly, but there’s no denying this suite is a fabulous piece of girly heaven. I can see many a slumber party happening here!

6. Hotel Missoni, Edinburgh

Just love this lobby. Look at those amazingly statuesque and glitzy vases. Wonderful right? I’d love to spend a night or two here and soak up all that beautiful Missoni print which is featured throughout the hotel.

7. Suite at Schlosshotel, Berlin, designed by Karl Lagerfeld

Very Parisian, Ritz-style glamour with modern ‘Karl’ touches such as the pictured monochromatic light features. Love the masculine club-style armchairs and the wonderful high ceilings.

8. Diane von Furstenberg suite, Claridges, London

Diane von Furstenberg’s interior designs can sometimes be described as ‘chaotically exotic’ due to her zealous use of colour and pattern, but this suite offers a slightly more paired down feel with art-deco patterns and black and white accents comprising the look. It really is one for the ultra fashionable to luxuriate in style.
