Come Fly with Me

Ahh the airport. Not only does it offer a runway for planes, it’s also long been the personal runway of the rich and famous. There’s something about airports (regular jet-setter or not), that makes you want to dress up and show off your take on ‘off-duty’ chic.

It’s quite difficult to straddle that line between luxe casual and stylish, whilst still retaining comfort. Naturally, (and this particularly applies when you’re flying home from tropical climes), you just want to slip into your flipflops. And for a night-time flight, a worn old hoodie and PJ’s never looked so inviting.

But it was ingrained in me from a young age to dress smartly to the airport. To this day I’m not even sure of the reason- all I know is my wonderful Mummy has never been so strict about my attire!

I can never be bothered to change on a flight like a certain Mrs Beckham- at most, I’ll bring an extra jumper. That means, I’ll never go dressed to the airport like she does- the heels are very much stowed in the suitcase!

Jane Birkin, Audrey Hepburn and Victoria Beckham do ‘Airport chic’

For me, comfort is Number 1. I’m not going to be wearing jeans (too restrictive). Equally, leggings are a no. So more than likely, I’ll travel in tights- (also good for the fact that my feet get extra cold). You’ll always catch me wearing a scarf too as I need that snuggly feeling!

Below is my ideal travel outfit, including accessories (don’t forget that all important Little Black Book!) Perhaps it’s a bit sombre but I’m very particular when it comes to airport dressing- playing it safe and stylish is my mantra :)

Travel chic

D-frame acetate sunglasses, Gucci / Asymmetric sweater, Maison Martin Margiela / Cable-knit snood, Dolce & Gabbana / Wafer notebook, Smythson / Back flap shorts, 3.1 Phillip Lim / Striped canvas tote, Pauric Sweeney / Bracelet, Hermes / BB patent leather  ballet flats, Repetto / Passport cover, Valextra

Look of the Day

july outfit
Cropped tweed jacket, Edward Achour  / Neon clutch, Pucci / Dress, Missoni / Resin bracelet, Mango / Slingback heels, Vionnet
I love the vibrancy and Mediterranean feel of orange for summer. And there’s no designer that evokes the spirit of this better than Missoni. With the brand’s signature zigzag prints, each piece is exotic enough for holiday attire but equally don’t look out of place for a chic city look.
The unexpected knitted fabric of this dress is great as it takes you from summer to autumn in an instant. It would look so amazing against a tan and offset by black, gold and orange accents. The Achour jacket is perfect to casually sling over your shoulders and the gold detailing gives it a glamorous lift.
A luxe evening look for at home or abroad, and I’ve definitely got my eye on that beautiful tangerine clutch!

The New Shirt

It’s no secret I love shirts. Give me a good old buttoned down number, perhaps some military-esque epaulettes and a pocket or two, and you won’t be able to rip it off my back, that’s for certain.

The only pre-requisite is cut. The shirt must, must, MUST be cut to perfection. I find some brands get this right, although unfortunately it’s usually the more expensive labels. But on the high street, I love the classic white shirts from Cos and Uniqlo- they’re cut very well indeed, enhancing the shape of the torso as a shirt should (well, as any article of clothing should for that matter.)

What I love about shirts, is that I find them to be one of the only pieces in the ‘tops’ category which have the versatility to be worn with anything.

This Summer, transitioning into Autumn, the shirt seems to have had a statement makeover. It seems to be the subject of a term I’ve now coined- ‘Colour-popping.’

Yes that’s right, ‘Colour-popping’, as opposed to the more ubiquitous ‘Colour-Blocking.’ (Journalists you’re at liberty to quote me on this ;)

Anyway, it’s pretty self explanatory, and shirt label, Equipment, have done a wonderful job in fuelling the trend which I’m sure will be a big one come Autumn.

Shirts by Equipment

Do you guys like your shirts? Having said all this, I actually own relatively few considering how much I love them. They’re kind of like that trusty friend who’s there in the background but who’s ultimately  a little forgettable. Except really not.

It’s hard to come up with an appropriate analogy because shirts are just great. They just are. You forget about wearing them but really, they’re actually one of the most exciting pieces of clothing ever invented. I mean, as demonstrated, look at all the cool things you can do to them!

They never stop evolving and they always make you look good.
